Question

My grandson, born Jun/01 recevied initial vaccinations under me before moving back to Navi Mumbai with parents;I purposefully didnot start Hib at 6 wks. hoping to reduce 1 prick;as per my wishes he was taken for the 1st Hib shot at age of 7 months;took 2nd shot at 8 months;my instruction was that he will receive the booster at 16-18 mts.[total of 3];at 9 months he was taken for his MV & the Paediatrician at Vaashi gave him a 3rd dose Hib!defering MV for 1 week.It is clearly mentioned in the IAP Yellow Guide 2001 pp35 that if the age of intial Hib vaccination is 7-11 months 2 doses at monthly interval & booster at 16-18 mts. Will the unwarranted 3rd monthly dose likely to harm the infant? I suppose you will recommend the booster at usual time.

Answer

Please read the article on HIB Vaccine on www.pediatriconcall.com or from the link given below: http://www.pediatriconcall.com/fordoctor/DiseasesandCondition/hib_vaccine.asp

An additional dose of HIB vaccine would not cause any harm, and yes, he would require to take the booster at 15-18 months.
