Question

A 24 yr old female conceived last year first trimester sono normal 4 thmonth sono shwoed mass ?attached to the foetus 5 thmonth confirmed that the mass was mostly bladder mass mostly cyst large mass the patient was induced and then delivered at 5 mnths torch was negative cord blood examined placenta examined hp done no significant positivve finding now the pt wants to conceive as her family physician what investigations and where can i get it done to rule out chromosomal and tumour anomalies in the foetus please guide.

Answer

It would be worthwile to know whether a proper autopsy was done on the fetus to know exactly what was the malformation. If the foetus had a bladder extrophy, then it is not an inherited condition and the chances of recurrence are very minimal. To prevent certain anomalies, antenatal folic acid to the mother is useful. To check for chromosomal anomalies in the fetus, amniocentesis at 12 -14 weeks of gestation or chorionic villus sampling at 6-7 weeks can be done. You need to consult a gynaecologist preferably attached to a bigger hospital who does these procedures
