Question

A 20 day old baby was recently brought to from an ashram.Being an abondoned baby she is being fed lactogen 1.She developed diarrhoea & since then she was given Lifelyte [a readymade ORS solution recently marketed] Can WHO ORS be given in newborn babies? If not what modification is required to give it ? Thank you

Answer

ORS in not recommended for new born babies. If the child has developed lactose intolerance, a soya milk product can be given. Also, if the baby was bottle fed, giving lactogen 1 in proper proportions or even full strength milk by vati and spoon can be tried.
