Question

IAP has mentioned 5th PRIMARY DOSE of OPV at 6th month of age. But latest 2005 version iof IAP guidelines of IAP has not mentioned it. SIMILARLY MANY POOR PEOPLE avoid to go only for OPV VACCINATION. ISit mandatory to insist on 5th dose .now a days all 3 hepb vaccine are given wth 3primary DPT doses so no vaccine other than opv 5 at 6 th month

Answer

The latest IAP recommendation of 2005is correct and that is same as National immunization schedule. Please remember that in addition to the primary three doses at 6,10 1nd 14 weeks of age, babies who can be approached at birth, one dose should be given. At the age of 16-18 months another dose of OPV is recommended. However IAP suggests an additional dose of OPV and DPT/DaPT at 5 yeras age.GOI recommends only DT vaccine at this time. All babies in addition to these doses should receive all doses of Pulse polio from birth to 5 years of age till Polio is eradicated from the country.
I hope that clarifies all the points raised by Dr Khandave.
