The currently available JE vaccine is a killed mouse brain vaccine derived from Nakayama strain and is imported from Korea.In India the same vaccine is manufactured in Central Research Institute,Kasauli,Himachal Pradesh and is supplied to State Govts on demand.This is not available for sale in private market.This vaccine is relatively safe and has an efficacy of about 80%.However occasional complications in the form of myelitis is reported.
The live attenuated vaccine is manufactured only in China and has been found to be safe and more efficacious with almost 100%seroconversion.At present it is used only for Chinese market.However the vaccine is shortly going to be marketed by a Koren company.It will take sometime for this vaccine to come to India since the vaccine is not WHO certified and a bridging clinical seroconversion study will be required before the vaccine marketed in India.
