This study assesses the types and frequencies of Malnutrition in preschoolers in Raipur and factors contributing to malnutrition. Study population consists of 121 Saryupari Brahmins (57 boys & 64 girls), 97 Teli (46 boys & 51 girls- caste of oil pressures and vendors but now primarily agriculturists and OBC category by Govt. of India) and 93 Rawats (49 boys & 46 girls - cattle herders and again in OBC category by Govt. of India). The Teli & Rawat children are representative of rural population whereas Brahmin children represent the affluent and upper socio economic class. As per the study, 28.1% Brahmin preschools had normal weight whereas 1% Rawat children and 4% Teli children had normal weight. Grade I malnutrition was seen in 46-28% Brahmin children, 40.86% Rawat children and 40.2% Teli children. Grade II and more malnutrition was seen in 25.6% of Brahmin children, 58.1% Rawat children and 55.6% Teli children suggesting mild to moderate type of PEM in Brahmins and moderate to severe type of PEM in Rawats and Teli. All these observations suggest that preschool children need better Nutrition to combat the problem of malnutrition.
