| PREVALENCE OF HYPERTENSION IN OBESE URBAN SCHOOL GOING CHILDREN IN MYSORE CITY |

Background and Objectives: A cross sectional study was conducted in 3352 school children belonging to affluent society of Mysore .prevalence of obesity was calculated in these children .Among the school children found to be obese . Prevalence of hypertension was studied and matched with age and sex controls.
Methods: school children were selected based on the simple random sampling method. Prevalence of obesity `was calculated based on BMI using NCHC guidelines cardiovascular risk factor such as blood pressure is evaluated in the obese and equal number age and sex matched controls .
Results: Prevalence of childhood obesity in affluent school children of Mysore city is 4.8% with females (5.6%) slightly more obese than males (4.3%).pre hypertension (18.9%) and Hypertension (24.5%) were found to be statistically significant in obese group compared to non obese group.
Conclusions: Prevalence of hypertension is on the rise in urban area even younger age group .Blood pressure is frequently elevated in obese children compared to lean subjects. Thus timely intervention will decrease the morbidity and mortality due to obesity in these children
