Objective: To study atypical manifestations of Hepatitis A in children under 14 years.

Materials & Methods: Retrospective analysis of children presented during the period of January 2002 and August 2005 with suggestive clinical symptoms and confirmed by IgM anti HAV antibody titre.

Results: Out of 40 children presented during the study period, 8 (20%) had one or more atypical manifestations. Out of 8 with typical manifestations, 3 had pleural effusion (37.5%) and 2 had thrombocytopenia (25%). Other atypical manifestations include pericardial effusion, sub acute pancreatitis, acute renal failure and prolonged cholestasis. Outcome in all the 8 children with atypical manifestations was good and there was no mortality.

Conclusion: Atypical manifestations of Hepatitis A are not uncommon and may contribute to the associated morbidity.
