Aim:

To estimate the prevalence of G-6-PD deficiency among jaundiced neonates.

Methods:

The study was conducted in a prospective manner at the out-born newborn unit of ICH & HC, Egmore, Chennai. It was cross sectional study among neonates with significant hyperbilirubinemia. The sample size was 50. The UV kinetic methods (spectrophotometric assay) was used for quantitative estimation of G-6 PD levels in neonatal RBC's. In addition, data on age, sex, maturity, consanguineous marriage, birth weight, hemoglobin levels, serum bilirubin, co-morbid illnesses etc. were also recorded.

Conclusion:

The prevalence of G-6-PD deficiency among jaundiced neonates was found to be low (2%). Routine screening for G-6 PD deficiency among jaundiced neonates is not recommended.
