XVII Annual Conference of IAP Maharashtra State (Mahapedicon 2006, Solapur, 3-5th November 2006)

Dr. Ira Shah
Department of Pediatrics, B. J. Wadia Hospital for Children, Mumbai

Abstract: Dengue virus is a member of the Flaviviridae group of viruses which include a number of neurotropic viruses such as Japanese encephalitis virus, St. Louis encephalitis virus and tick-borne encephalitis virus. In recent years, we and other have reported neurologic manifestations in patients with DHF & DSS characterized by depression of consciousness with normal CSF analysis. Isolated CNS involvement is a rarity. A 10 years old girl born presented with fever since 8 days, projectile vomiting since 5 days, altered sensorium, inability to stand and squint since 1 day. On examination, she had meningeal signs. She had right lateral palsy and tone ataxia. CSF analysis showed aseptic meningitic picture [3 polymorphs, 19 lymphocytes/cumm; 52 mg/dl – sugar; proteins = 10.3 mg%]. Dengue IgM by capture ELISA was done which was positive. She was treated with Mannitol and all her symptoms resolved within 3 days.
