Abstract: Thrombocytopenia in HIV infected patients has an overall prevalence varying between 5-10%. We present 2 children of HIV associated thrombocytopenia, the first one who had a rise in platelet count with ART and the second who continued to have thrombocytopenia inspite of ART but had no bleeding manifestations.
Case 1: A 5 year old HIV infected boy presented with AIDS with miliary tuberculosis and thrombocytopenia and prolonged bleeding from gums. He was started on 3 drug ART consisting of stavudine, Lamivudine and Nevirapine. Anemia and thrombocytopenia improved with antiretroviral therapy.
Case 2: A 9 years old girl with HIV infection and empyema and thrombocytopenia. She was started on 3 drugs ART consisting of Zidovudine (AZT), Lamivudine (3TC) and Nevirapine (NVP) along with Trimethoprim Sulphamethaxole prophylaxis. On follow up after 6 months, thrombocytopenia persisted though her other symptoms resolved and she has not had any bleeding from any site.
