Objective : |
A retrospective study was carried out to study partial seizures in children.

Design :

A total No. of 5650 EEG recordings were analyzed to study the incidence and prevalence of partial seizures in children in the last 7 years from a major Epilepsy referral center of North Karnataka.

1454 cases of partial seizures were studied in the pediatric age group.

Method & Design :
|
5650 EEG's from a major epilepsy center of North Karnataka were analyzed for the incidence of partial seizures in children. 1454 (25.7%) were cases of partial seizure analyzed based on the 1981 International League Against Epilepsy ILAE).

| Results :

Of the 1454 cases of partial seizures based on the ILAE 1981 classification of seizures 854 (58.7%) were in age group of 0-5, 278 (19.1%) in age group of 5-10 and 322 (22.1%) were in age group of 10 and above. The most common area of the brain involved for the seizures was the right Parieto – Tempero – Occipital lobe with Ring lesion (Granuloma (SSECTL) being the commonest causative factor (Neurocysticercosis – Neuro tuberculosis) for the partial seizures, with other etiological causes being cortical infarcts, post infective, tumors.

Conclusion :
|
Partial seizures are less commonly seen in pediatric age group unlike generalized seizures, which is the most common variety of seizure disorder based on the 1981 ILAE Classification of Seizure. Most of the partial seizures are usually symptomatic unlike generalized seizures, which are idiopathic. All partial seizures necessarily need further studies like CT/MRI/SPECT/PET to establish the underlying causative factor unlike generalized seizures, which do not generally need further studies. This classification of seizures based on ILAE 1981, into Generalized and Partial seizures helps in management of childhood Epilepsies – which are the most common pediatric neurological problems and every clinician has to follow these guidelines for obtaining of seizure free life in pediatric epilepsies.
