Childhood Disablity Update 2005

DR. M SARAVANAN
DEPARTMENT OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
MANIPAL

ABSTRACT:

Purpose: The study aims at analyzing the performance of children with spastic diplegia with minimal tonal dysfunction. Also comparing their performance with age related typically developing children.

Method:Thirty children with spastic diplegia and age related typically developing children from (6-8years) were observed while performing coloring, tracing, and scissoring activities. Their performance in the three activities were graded using a scale developed for the study, Mann- Whitney u test was used to statistically compare the two groups in each activity individually and the total score.

Results: There was a significant difference between the two groups in tracing activity (p<0.001), coloring activity (p<0.001), scissoring activity (p<0.016) and total (p<0.001). Most of the children with diplegia had problems in all the activity especially scissoring because of in exposure to the activity and poor postural problems compared to typically developing children.

Discussion and Conclusion: The children with spastic diplegia, even with mild tonal problems are prone to have problems in school activities and their problems need to be addressed.
