Aim
To compare the clinical profile and outcome of DM in infants with older children.
Study Setting
Diabetic Clinic ICH & HC, Egmore, Chennai.
Study Design
Descriptive Study.
Methodology
20 infants diagnosed as diabetic <1 year compared with 40 older children chosen among the 224 total diabetic cases by systemic random sampling. Demographic, clinical and biochemical parameters and Co morbidity and mortality compared. LBW had associations with infantile Diabetes Mellitus. Ketotic onset, shock requiring ventilatory and ionotropic support, more co morbid condition, poor glycemic control with more mortality found in <1 year than the older diabetics, which is found statistically significant (P value <0.05).
Conclusion
DM associated with more acute, severe symptoms needing intensive care management in infants. More Co-morbidity and mortality due to poor glycemic control associated.
