Stepwise Asthma Therapy Summary

Treatment goals:

Although there is no cure for asthma at present, asthma stepwise treatment along with environmental control measures is designed to provide optimal control of asthma and simultaneously limiting side effects of drugs. The following goals should be aimed for:

Prevent symptoms including nocturnal symptoms and exercise-induced symptoms.

Near normal pulmonary functions.

Maintaining normal physical activity and sleep patterns.

Try to eliminate exposure to allergens and triggers and hence reduce exacerbations.

Reduce need for emergency visits for acute exacerbations and hospitalization.

Reduce dosage and side effects of drugs.

Use of inhaled beta-2 agonist < twice-daily.

Use of short courses of high dose daily oral corticosteroids < 4 times yearly.

Satisfaction of patients and relatives.
