SUGGESTED DIET OR MENU PLAN FOR A CHILD TO PREVENT PEM OR FOR TREATING PEM :-

OBJECTIVE :- To cater to the exact needs for the child's caloric (Nutrition ) requirements and palatability and taste.

Note :- This diet is planned keeping in consideration:

  • note Child's age - eight months to twelve months


  • note Child has been already introduced to solid foods.

MENU PLAN :-

Marasmus
Kwashiorkor

Morning 7-8 am
  • Kwashiorkor Milk - 1 cup (100 ml) + sugar- 2 tsp(10gms)
  • Kwashiorkor 2-3 Biscuits
  •      or
  • Kwashiorkor Half an Egg (could be diluted in milk).

10.00 - 11.00 am

Any porridge like :
  • Kwashiorkor Ragi Porridge - 1 katori (100gms)
  •      or
  • Kwashiorkor Rava Porridge - 1 - katori (100gms)
  •      or
  • Kwashiorkor Wheat flour porridge- 1 katori (100gms)

Lunch 12.30 - 1.30 p.m.
  • Kwashiorkor Khichdi with mashed vegetables - 2 katori
  •      or
  • Kwashiorkor Upma - 2katori
  •      or
  • Kwashiorkor Rice + dal - 2 katori
  •      or
  • Kwashiorkor One soft chapati soaked in half vati blended dal.
  •      or
  • Kwashiorkor Half vati curd + one and a half vati rice

4.00-4.30p.m
  • Kwashiorkor Milk - 1cup (100ml)+ Sugar-2tsp(10gms)
  • Kwashiorkor 2-3biscuits.
  •      or
  • Kwashiorkor Half an Egg (could be diluted in milk).

5.30-6.30p.m
  • Kwashiorkor 1Cup fruit juice + a pinch of salt to taste
  •      or
  • Kwashiorkor 1 Cup Vegetable soup-100ml +sugar to taste (2tsp)
  •      or
  • Kwashiorkor 1 Cup Dal soup - 100ml.
  •      or
  • Kwashiorkor One Banana (big) with sprinkled sugar.

Dinner 8.00- 8.30 p.m
  • Kwashiorkor Same as Lunch

Bed time 10.30p.m
  • Kwashiorkor 1 Cup Milk + sugar (2tsp) + 2-3 biscuits


NOTE :-

  • note Besides the given diet, if the child is taking breast-milk, please continue till the time child is comfortable with it.

  • note Recipe for ragi porridge is given.

  • note Food should be cooked in utmost clean environment & with boiled water whenever required.

RAGI PORRIDGE

Ingredients :-

Ragi flour (roasted) - 50gmsBengal gram dal flour(roasted) - 15gmsJaggery - 5gmsOil - 5 gms

Method :-

Jaggery Solution is prepared & boiled. The roasted flours are heated with little oil. The roasted flours are mixed & a batter in made with hot water. This batter is poured in small quantities at a time into boiling jaggery solution, stirring to a uniform mixture. The mixture is boiled for 10-15 mins. It is removed from the fire & served warm to the child as one feed.

Total calories :- 250 Kcals

Proteins :- 8gms.
