Q5) What are the types of fortifiers?
A5) Human milk is the first choice & ideal feed for feeding the LBW babies. However, in VLBWs & ELBW babies, who may not take adequate volumes of breast milk & have high demands of various nutrients, milk can be fortified with these Human Milk Fortifiers (HMF) to enhance proteins, energy & vitamin content. They are available as dry powders in our country.

Addition of oil & sugar is a cheaper & readily available alternative to HMF. Coconut oil, which contains high MCT, can be used instead of expensive MCT oil.
