INFLUENZA - PREVENTION
Question:
Should the doctors now take influenza vaccine?
Answer:
Here is a scenario where a healthcare worker came in contact with a patient with influenza A (H1N1) virus and took post exposure prophylaxis with oseltamivir. The prevention in the form of influenza vaccine must be considered for doctors to prevent further influenza virus infection and its complications which might occur on repeated contact with the patients. CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses and its complications. According to CDC, the emergence since 2005 of resistance to one or more of the four licensed antiviral agents (oseltamivir, zanamivir, amantadine, and rimantadine) among circulating strains has complicated antiviral treatment and chemoprophylaxis recommendations.
