Chlorate
 
Sodium salt {resembles table salt} is more toxic than potassium salt



Route : Ingestion

Fatal dose : 20 to 30gm

Mechanism of action : •It is a powerful osxidising agent and attacks all body cells. It oxidizes hemoglobin to methemoglobin

Clinical picture : •Nausea, vomiting, colicky pain and diarrhea
•Blood, protein and hemoglobin in urine, oliguria, anuria and renal failure
•Hemolysis, jaundice and hepatic failure
•If methhemoglobin levels reach 40 percent or more : agitation, weakness, convulsions and muscular twichings and death due to renal failure


Treatment : •Stomach wash with warm water or sodium bicarbonate
•Methylene blue 25 ml 1 percent solution i.v.and ascorbic acid 1gm
•peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis
•Symptomatic
