Methy isocyanate(MIC)
 

It is a fairly stable liquid at 27oc, but becomes gaseous at 31oc. It has a pungent sweetish smell. It is highly volatile and inflammable. It is used in the manufacture of pesticides, adhesives and plastics.


Route : Inhalation

Mechanism of action : •irritant action of the vapour at the biophysical level
•carbymaltion action at the biochemical level


Clinical picture : •Acute irritation of eyes, lacrymation, blurring of vision, severe burning in throat, chest pain and laboured breathing,
•Liver damage, kidney damage, methemoglohinemia and neurological defects
•Teratogenic or mutagenic agents



Treatment : •Symptomatic
•Sodium thiosulphate is beneficial
