Bed Wetting (Nocturnal Enuresis)
BED WETTING (NOCTURNAL ENURESIS)
Dr. Vivek M. Rege
Pediatric Surgeon & Pediatric Urologist Sir Hurkisondas Hospital.

This is yet another common problem, which is seen more often in boys than girls. These children pass urine unknowingly in their sleep during the night even after 4 years of age causing a lot of anxiety to their parents. The first thing to find out is whether the child is a Primary or a Secondary Enuretic. By primary, it means a child who has always been bed-wetting throughout and continues to do so even after 4-5 years of age. By secondary, it means a child who was wetting at night, but had totally stopped doing so at least for 6 months and now has restarted bed wetting again. In both cases, it is better to consult a doctor for an opinion. The parents must observe and note the urinary habits of the child frequency, straining to pass urine, poor stream etc. Any specific incident in the house after which the episodes of wetting have begun like change of school, change of class teacher, fear of a teacher, etc. should also be investigated. Some of these children need a complete check up of the urinary system, as well as an Urodynamic study, which is a specialized study of the pattern and pressures during passage of urine in that child. Based on all these results, a rational systematic approach is required to treat this problem. The child must be given due importance in the therapy and his or her active participation in the treatment must be solicited. This will give a lot of impetus and incentive to the child in curing his problem.
