MASSAGE OF DIFFERENT BODY PARTS IN BABIES AND INFANTS
Head Massage and massaging face
Use your fingertips to massage baby's face. Stroke from the middle of his forehead, towards the temples and in towards his cheeks. You can also work a gentle path from the temples to the base of the head on the back. Stroke the eyebrows, the cheeks and baby's little nose gently. Then move down to the jaws and front part of the neck. Be very gentle here. From the neck, move towards the shoulders and down on to the chest.

Chest, belly, shoulders and arms

Palms of the hands should be used to massage these areas. Start with the baby's shoulders and make gentle strokes in towards the chest.

Massage the arms by stroking from the shoulders down towards the wrists. Do not apply oil to the baby's hands as the baby may put his hands into the mouth. While massaging the shoulders, arms and hands, also move the hands and shoulders gently so that they get the needed exercise.

Massage the belly using circular, clockwise strokes from below the ribs. Be gentle here as pressing may lead to regurgitation of milk that the baby may have had. Do not massage the genitalia

Legs

Start by massaging toes of the baby's feet with your fingertips and then massage the soles of baby's feet using your palms. Use firm, gentle, slow strokes from the heel towards the toes. At the heels, slow, circular motions can be applied. Continue with long smooth strokes up baby's legs. Massage from the ankle up to the thigh and over the hip. You can try massaging either legs at once or just one at time. While massaging the legs, you can move the legs across the hips and knees so that these limbs also get the required exercise.

Back
Gently turn the baby on to the stomach. Lightly stroke baby's head, neck, back in a downward direction with the palms of your hands. Using the fingertips and massaging in circular manner, massage the back and shoulders to massage the muscles of the back. Massage the legs using gentle soft strokes to work a path down towards the foot.
