Question
Dear sir, I have a case of rheumatic fever {12 years old} doing well on aspirin. She contracted chicken pox what should be done?
Answer
A child with rheumatic fever does not need to be on aspirin unless and until has active disease process. In such a case, if the child gets chickenpox, one may treat with acyclovir and also keep a watch on liver enzymes. If they start elevating, aspirin may have to be stopped. Please confirm the diagnosis of Rheumatic fever first.
