Question |
what is mediterrenean fever, what causes it and how is it cured?

Answer |
Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is also called recurrent polyserositis. The salient features of this disease include brief recurrent episodes of peritonitis, pleuritis, and arthritis, which are usually associated with fever leading to amyloidosis. The disease occurs within families and is much more common in individuals of Mediterranean descent than in persons of any other ethnicity.
Nonsense or missense mutations in the MEFV (Mediterranean fever) gene appear to cause the disease.
Treatment consists of Colchicine to prevent attacks and also the development of amyloidosis.
