Question
A 5 month old male has come to me with fourth episode of loose motions. The first attack was at one month of age and at that time stool examination showed lactose intolerance. He has been on lactose free milk since then. Every month he has episodes of watery stools. x-ray showed pneumonic patches. I gave him a 5 day course of cefotaxime. His appetite remains good .what is the approach to this patient?
Answer
If the child putting on weight or not? Also is the child on exclusive Breast feeds or is on top feeds? One would first rule out faulty feeding and if the child is growing well may not be too worried about the same.
If there is failure to thrive and dietary cause has been ruled out, you may rule out IgA deficiency by doing serum immunoglobulins and also rule out cystic fibrosis.
