Question
Dear sir, I am working in a primary health center. I want to know If an infant is having watery diarrhea with mild dehydration do not respond to Syp Oflox -TZ and ORS even after 5 days of treatment How should I approach these type of cases although baby take adequate ORS and breast milk but diarrhea persist but dehydration improve. Please guide me.
Answer
Supplement zinc for all diarrhea patients. Since watery diarrhea is present, it most commonly is due to viral infections and antibiotics are not required. Sometimes probiotics such as lactobacillus may be useful. If the diarrhea persists for more than 10-14 days, then one must rule out secondary lactose intolerance and milk may be omitted from the diet.
