Question
I needed information on bactec culture technique.
Answer
It is a liquid culture medium used to detect growth of organisms faster than the regular culture medium. Organisms such as M. tuberculosis can be especially grown faster and results can be obtained within 10 -14 days as compared to 3-6 weeks on a regular medium. An advantage of the BACTEC system is that it provides a safe, efficient procedure for culture of blood from patients infected with HIV. It also allows rapid differentiation of M.tuberculosis complex and non-tuberculous mycobacteria and rapid determination of drug susceptibility.
