Question
What should the duration of antibiotic therapy in enteric fever with ciprofloxacin for a child of 10 years be?
Answer
Ideally treatment of typhoid with ciprofloxacin is to be given for 10days or till seven days after fever subsides. However, if the patient continues to have fever for more than a week after starting ciprofloxacin, it is to be treated as drug resistance and change of antibiotics would be warranted. To prevent chronic carrier state, antibiotics such as ampicillin would be to be given for 21 days.
