Question

How safe are the mosquito repellants=liquid & mats for men, children, neonates ? An expectant faher has asked me if he can use it at night with the newborn in the room. I realised I know very little about these devices but had reply asking him not to use it.Pl. enlighten

Answer

Mosquito repellents containing DEET (10%) or citronella are used in children. Excess use of DEET can cause adverse effects. Baygon in excess dose is harmful as it may lead to poisoning. There have been studies that show that prolonged use of mosquito mats (coils and mats using Allethrin -a synthetic pyrethroid) can lead to corneal damage, shortness of breath, asthma and even damage liver in the long run. Infants exposed to mosquito repellent mats have been known to suffer from convulsions. Always use mosquito repellents with caution in children.
