Question
For how long does one have to continue Phenobarbitone in a case of neonatal hepatitis?
Answer
There are very few studies that determine the efficacy of Phenobarbitone in Neonatal hepatitis. It is routinely used for 5 days prior to HIDA scan and also for differentiation from Crigler Najer 1 and 2. However prolonged use has been tried in Neonatal cholestasis leading to pruritis but results are inconclusive.
