Question
Ferrous Ascorbate preparation for treatment of IDA has been claimed to be Gut friendly, No staining of Teeth. Pharmacology not available in Nelson or IAP Textbook. Please clarify the claim of Manufacturers.
Answer
The greater absorption of iron in vivo from ferrous ascorbate as compared with ferrous sulfate has been ascribed both to retardation or prevention of Fe oxidation by ascorbate and to the existence of Fe as a chelate with ascorbate. However there are no studies that state on the adverse effects related to this compound.
