I want to know (a)what is the drug of choice for Enteric fever in order of preference (1)-Tab Cefixime (2)Tab Ciproflox(3)Tab Oflox (4) Cap Chloramphencol(5) Tab Cotrimoxazol (6)Cap Ampicilline(7) Inj Ceftriaxone (b)--Why in books drug of choice for Enteric fever is given as Ciprofloxacin not as Quinolones Ciproflox is one of the quinolone (c)---i want to know if Widal test will be positive after taking antibiotics for 5 days.
Answer
Other quinolones are not recommended for use in children, though now reports of ofloxacin have been good. For drug of choice, it depends on the local susceptibility pattern. Most of the enteric cases now are MDR and hence standard drugs such as chloramphenicol, ampicillin and septran do not seem to work. The newer drugs to which the organism is still not resistant is ciprofloxacin, cephalosporins, azithromycin and cefixime.
