Question
New born baby delivered in the 34th week of pregnancy with wt of 2150 gms and blood glucose level of 20mg/dl was corrected with frequent oral feeding to reach 64mg/dl on the 3rd day after labour. Is there any risk of decrease in blood glucose level later? Is this a case of hyperinsulinemia or this is a normal condition? and when can we be sure that this baby is safe?
Answer
Since the baby is a preterm and also low birth weight, there is tendency towards hypoglycemia. It would be better to wait and watch if the hypoglycemia is refractory. If it remains refractory inspite of a good GDR, then rule out other causes of neonatal hypoglycemia.
