Question
We give in Egypt compulsory measles vaccine at 9 months and MMR at 15 month. What’s the significance of measles at 9 month and if measles vaccine give long lasting immunity why we give it again on 15 month with mumps and rubella as MMR?
Answer
In India, Measles vaccine is given at 9 months because the maternally acquired antibody against measles declines by 9 months of age and babies are prone to develop measles after that period of time. Mumps and Rubella vaccine cannot be administered at nine months of age as MMR vaccine because maternally acquired antibody against mumps and rubella persist for at least 12 months of age. Hence MMR vaccine is given at 15 months of age. This is because of non availability of separate MR vaccine and if there is non receipt of measles vaccine at nine months,MMR will take care of measles part also.
