Question
Respected Sir/ madam, during the recent pulse polio drive in Mumbai, the monovalent vaccine was used. no child was suppose to receive the trivalent vaccine in the subsequent week as they would be covered with trivalent vaccine on house to house survey. The newborns were also to receive the monovalent vaccine. I have a query whether giving them a trivalent vaccine is a better option. In a hospital setting what should be done for those babies born after 15 may and before 21 may as they are not suppose to receive trivalent OPV. they are also less likely to be covered in house to house visit due to hospital stay. Please let me know. with regards Dr. Sangeeta Sawant.
Answer
Your fears are quite genuine.
But pro-grammatically, we need to administer only m-OPV during the SIA week.
Further, the chances of newborn getting infected with other strains of polio virus are remote as Type 2 is not reported anywhere from the world since Oct 1999 and P3 since Dec 2004 that too only in western UP. Nevertheless, the child is going to receive trivalent OPV through routine immunization.
