Question
Dear Sir,In routine immunization Hepatitis vaccine is given at 6 weeks 10 weeks 14 weeks. But in adult it is given 0, 1 month &6 months. Why there is this difference in adult and infant immunization. Please tell me how much immunity three injections of hepatitis vaccine give i.e. is booster necessary?
Answer
Hepatitis B vaccine in children can be given at birth, 4 weeks and 14 weeks or at 4,8,12 weeks or 0,1,6 months. In adults it can also be given at 0,1,6 months or even 0,1,2 months. Till date no booster has been recommended as protective antibodies may last even up to 20 years after vaccination. However on may do antibody levels after 8-10 years after vaccination and it the levels of antiHbs ab are low, a booster dose may be given.
