Question
Six year old female, underwent ureteral re implantation for vesicoureteral reflux 2 years ago. Repeat of surgery 1 year ago because of severe debilitating pain and frequent UTI's. All surgeries performed at Johns Hopkins. She continues to have severe pain with voiding and is currently hospitalized with UTI, vomiting, lethargy and pain. The GU MD at Hopkins has no further suggestions for control of pain. I have attempted to find a COMPREHENSIVE pediatric pain management program for her, with little success. The family lives in Virginia, near Manassas.Do you have any suggestions?
Answer
What is the reason for the pain in the child? A UTI unless and until it is pyelonephritis causes pain and that is also controlled once the infection comes under control. First try and find out the cause of the pain and treat the cause. The pain should significantly reduce with that.
