Question
Please tell me the prognosis for a 9 year old child with a diagnosis of GLANDULAR FEVER .I do not have details except that antibodies to CMV are raised. Does this mean it is infectious mononucleosis caused by EBV /CMV virus ,Are there long term implications, if so what can the parents look our for. The doctors here do not share information and i would like to help my friend with more than just reassurances and thanks for a good site . It has brought back memories of my student days so many years ago. I would also look for articles on psychosomatic manifestations / chronic stress symptoms and mental health issues of children in your website. Thanks again sincerely sandhya.
Answer
Are the CMV IgM or IgG raised? If the IgG is raised it may be due to a past infection also. In that case one can do a repeat titre after 4 weeks to look for a four fold rise in titres.
Infectious mononucleosis is a self limiting disease leading to fever, enlarged glands and hepatosplenomegaly. Sometimes rash may be seen. It is commonly seen with CMV and EBV infection.
Long term implications : EBV may be associated with lymphoma, immunodeficiency and even histiocytosis in genetically susceptible individuals.
