Question
Which is better an IUGR or a Preterm baby, Give reasons for your answer.
Answer
Children born at low weights may not have a poor immediate prognosis but may present an increased risk of progressing with growth deficiency. On the other hand, infants that exhibit catch-up growth, especially rapid increases in weight during the first 2 years of life have short-term benefits with lower rates of hospitalization and mortality, although they have an increased risk of progressing to obesity and chronic diseases in adulthood, including hypertension, coronary disease and diabetes.
The prognosis of the premature infant depends in the first place chiefly upon the actual (fetal) age, or in other words upon the length of time it has remained within the uterine nest (Pfaundler); the infant born before the twenty-seventh week of pregnancy having but a slight chance of living. Also the short term mortality in form of NEC,infections, IVH,retinopathy is high.
Thus it would be best to avoid a preterm small for gestational age baby.
