Question
Why do children less than 2 years get only bronchopneumonia and not lobar pneumonia?
Answer
IN infants, Bronchopneumonia, a patchy consolidation involving one or more lobes, usually involves the dependent lung zones, usually is seen due to aspiration of oropharyngeal contents and secondary infection. Community acquired pneumonia is seen with S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, and S. aureus, which leads to life-threatening pneumonia, usually with lobar consolidation. Both bronchopneumonia and lobar pneumonia are common in infants.
