Question
Could be please let me know the standard treatment protocol for treating vitamin D deficiency rickets as some disagree with the conventional Strauss regime?
Answer
Strauss regime was developed so that therapeutic dose of vitamin D could be given in one dose. Thus issues of compliance could be taken care of. However there is always a risk of causing low ionic calcium and hypercalciuria with giving too high a dose of vitamin D at one shot. As a result some prefer to give vitamin D as 60,000 unit/day for 10 days or even doses of 5000-10000 units/day for 1-2 months provided compliance can be assured.
