Question
What may be cause(s) of recurrence of severe vitamin A deficiency despite treating previous deficiency state with injectable vitamin A? - 1) persistent no intake of vitamin A containing foods & drugs? or 2) malabsorption syndrome? 3) hepatic cause? 4) any other systemic cause? How to approach?
Answer
Since the child has developed Vitamin A deficiency inspite of correction, it means that it is not getting absorbed from the intestine. In such a case one should rule out Liver disease especially cholestasis, Cystic fibrosis, Malabsorption states. Since A is a fat soluble vitamin, other fat soluble vitamin deficiency should be ruled out such as Vitamin D, E, and K.
