KIDNEY DIALYSIS

Kidney Failure, when you first hear this diagnosis, it’s scary. But there are several treatment options available for people with kidney failure like Kidney transplantation, Dialysis.

Dialysis- a way to remove waste products and excess water from your blood. Many of us may be aware of Hemo-dialysis i.e. removal of waste products and excess water by artificial kidney (dialyser). But very few of us aware of Home dialysis or Continuous ambulatory peritoneal

dialysis (CAPD).

CAPD - This is the manual method and the most widely used form of Peritoneal Dialysis, PD. In CAPD there is no need for a machine and it can be done in any clean, well-lit place.

A prescribed amount of sterile dialysis fluid flows into the catheter to fill the abdominal cavity. Once the fluid is inside the abdomen, there is a continuous dialysis. Because the peritoneum is rich in tiny blood vessels, it continually provides a supply of blood to be filtered. Waste products and excess water filter from the bloodstream through the peritoneal membrane into the solution. After a few hours, the fluid is drained out and replaced with fresh fluid. Every time the fluid is drained, the uremic toxins and excess water that were filtered from the blood are removed. These "drain and refill" exchanges are done three to four times a day. Each exchange takes approximately 30-40 minutes. Some doctors feel that CAPD have several benefits when compared to hemodialysis. With continuous dialysis, you can control extra fluid more easily, and this may reduce stress on the heart and blood vessels. You are able to eat more and use fewer medications. You can do more of your daily activities and it is easier to work or travel.
