IRON DEFICIENCY IN CHILDREN


What is iron deficiency?
The main cause of iron deficiency in the first six months of life is prematurity and inadequate accumulation of iron in the newborn (if the mother is deficient in iron). After six months main cause of iron deficiency is dietary inadequacy and poor intake of iron rich foods. Worms can also lead to iron deficiency by causing blood loss in the stools

What are the symptoms of iron deficiency?
Iron deficiency causes first behavioural changes in the children like lethargy, irritability and inability to concentrate. Later the child will develop low hemoglobin, tiredness and easy fatigability. Over a period of time, the shape of the nails may change and nails may become spoon shaped.

How is iron deficiency diagnosed?
Iron deficiency can be diagnosed by doing the blood iron levels. Even low hemoglobin with small red cells in the blood may suggest iron deficiency.

What is the treatment of iron deficiency?
Iron deficiency is not a disease; it is a lack of iron in the body which can lead to disease. It can be cured by good intake of iron in the diet and even iron tablets / syrups.

How can iron deficiency be prevented?
Iron deficiency can be prevented by eating iron rich food. Food rich in iron is green leafy vegetables, fruits, meat and liver.
