EXPERT'S OPINION:

Query: My son of coming to 17-month is diagnosed with hydrocele a month plus ago. We are advised that a surgery is the best treatment but we have not decided to put him under knife yet. Some 3 weeks ago, he had a fever and his hydrocele which has been at his groin moved to his scrotum and turn bruise colour. But when the fever subsided, the hydrocele moved back to his groin area. Few days ago, he had fever again and the same scenario happened. The scrotum moved from his groin to the scrotum and became bluish, bruise colour. And the size of the hyrocele is bigger this time and he complained of pain. His fever subsided after 1 day but the hydrocele stayed at scrotum and still bluyish in colour but he did not complain of pain now. Did the hydrocele cause the fever or the fever cause the hydrocele to move from one place to the other? Shall we be more concerned that he ever complained of pain? Shall we bring him for surgery soon or can we continue to monitor and not do anything?

Answer: Dr Vivek Rege, .
Regarding your son's hydrocele, there is no doubt that it requires surgery since he is over 1 year of age. The pain and bluish discoloration may be due to infection in the hydrocele, and that makes it more imperative that you get it operated from a Pediatric Surgeon soon after the pain, fever etc subsides and get a CBC and Urine examination done, show it to your Pediatrician and go ahead and get your son operated.
