News Letter June 2009
Dear Subscriber:
New features on www.pediatriconcall.com for this month:
EXPERT'S OPINION:

Query: My 6 yr old son has had persistent swollen cervical glands for the past 6 months. He has seen a Pediatrician, ENT and Pediatric Surgeon who all say they are not large enough to biopsy. The largest is between 1.5 - 2cm and has not grown in the last few month of monitoring it; the other 4 are all less than 1cm. They are all on the left side. He has had no infections that we have known about. I have been told to only take him back if they get bigger. Why do they not want to biopsy one, if would at least give me peace of mind. My husband and I argue about it all the time as he says we have to trust the specialists and that we have got more than one opinion. I am so scared that it could be something serious that is being missed, especially after googling lymph nodes on the internet. PLEASE HELP!

Answer: Biopsy is required to rule out cancer. If it was cancer, the nodes would increase in size, become painful and the child would get other symptoms such as fever. Since the nodes have remained of the same size for months now, it would be better to wait and watch especially since biopsy would require anesthesia.
