EXPERT OPINION:

Query: Could you please explain 'Kohler's Disease' and further action / treatment as my 5 year old son has the symptoms.

Answer: Kohler's disease is a disorder where the blood supply to the particular bone called as (navicular bone) in the foot decreases as a result of which the bone becomes necrosed. This is seen in children between 4-5 years of age and more common in boys. The cause is not known though mechanical force and compression of the bone are speculated as the possible cause. The child will complain of pain in the legs while walking, limping and even swelling. The condition can be diagnosed on an X ray. Treatment may consist of rest or even application of casts depending upon the severity. This condition is usually self limiting. Most of the patients have no problems later in life and prognosis is very good.
