EXPERT’S OPINION:
Query: I read you information on VUR which was very helpful. I have a follow up question: You say that "repeated urinary tract infections along with VUR can damage the kidneys". How many infections should a parent worry about? (My son is 2 years old and has had one bladder infection and my pediatrician suggests testing for VUR). I am worried that the test is rather invasive. What frequency of infections would lead you to recommend a test? (My son is also not circumcised).

Answer:
Usually any child less than 5 years of age especially a male child with a UTI is advised a minimum of ultrasonography of the kidneys and the bladder to check for any abnormality. Other tests such as MCU may also be advised in a younger child. Remember it is the VUR that can lead to kidney damage and it is better to check for it so that treatment can be initiated. The number of infections that can lead to kidney damage cannot be calibrated as it all depends on the amount of reflux and the severity of infections with UTI.
