EXPERT'S OPINION:

Query: My ten year old daughter was possibly diagnosed with an abnormal calcification of the brain and would like to know if this is serious and a second opinion is necessary. I want to know if treatment is necessary and what other diagnosis is possible. Thank you- a very concerned parent.

Answer: Calcification in the brain could be due to a variety of reasons. It could suggest healed infection such as Tuberculosis, Neurocysticercosis, congenital infection etc. It could such increased blood calcium levels due to a variety of causes. Regarding whether treatment is necessary or not, one has to first know the reason for which the CT scan was advised in the first place as it is not a routine investigation. Treatment would depend on the clinical picture.
