EXPERT'S OPINION:
Query: My 10 year old son was recently diagnosed with PU valves. He has reflux to both kidneys and his bladder has been damaged (both muscles and nerves). After the operation he was retested and no real improvement was found. He is now going to self cather 4 times daily to keep infection from occurring. I've been told about an intermstem product, which can be placed in the bladder to help with voiding. Is there any one out there who knows if this has been used in children and what the outcomes have been? Thank you.

Answer: If there is significant VUR, leading to kidney damage, surgery in the form of ureteric reimplantation may be tried to reposition the ureters in the bladder in such a way that the reflux stops. However, since the nerves are damages as in a neurogenic bladder, the surgery may not be very useful.
